What is Cumulative GPA?

Cumulative GPA is the overall grade point average across all semesters or courses you've completed. It represents your total academic performance, unlike a semester GPA, which only covers one term.

The formula is simple:

Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Quality points are calculated by multiplying the grade point value (e.g., A = 4.0) by the credit hours of the course. For a 4.0 scale, an A in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points.

How to Calculate Cumulative GPA

  1. List every course or semester with its GPA (or grade) and credit hours.
  2. Convert each GPA to quality points: Quality Points = GPA × Credit Hours.
  3. Sum all quality points and all credit hours.
  4. Divide total quality points by total credit hours.

For course-by-course calculation, you can use letter grades instead of numeric GPA. The calculator will convert them based on the selected scale.

Cumulative GPA Calculator by Semester

Enter each semester's GPA and credit hours to see your cumulative average. A common mistake is to simply average semester GPAs without accounting for credit load. That gives a misleading result because credit hours represent the weight of each semester.

For example, a 3.0 GPA over 30 credits should have more influence on your cumulative GPA than a 4.0 GPA over 12 credits. The calculator correctly weighs each semester by its credit hours, so you get an accurate result.

How to Calculate Cumulative GPA from a Transcript

Switch to the Transcript mode and enter each course's grade (or GPA) and credit hours as they appear on your transcript. The calculator assumes these courses count toward your GPA according to the selected mapping. It does not account for withdrawals, pass/fail, repeated courses, or institutional grade replacement policies. For such cases, consult your school's official GPA calculation.

Worked Example

Suppose a student completed two semesters:

SemesterGPACreditsQuality Points
Fall3.51552.5
Spring3.81868.4

Total Quality Points = 52.5 + 68.4 = 120.9
Total Credits = 15 + 18 = 33
Cumulative GPA = 120.9 ÷ 33 = 3.66

Mode B Example (Current + New Semester):
Current: 3.20 × 60 = 192 quality points
New: 3.80 × 15 = 57 quality points
Total: 249 quality points ÷ 75 credits = 3.32

Cumulative GPA vs. Semester GPA

A semester GPA reflects your performance in a single term. Cumulative GPA includes all semesters so far. If you have a low semester GPA early on, later strong semesters can slowly raise your cumulative average, but they won't erase past grades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Add up the quality points (GPA × credits) for every course or semester, then divide by total credits.
Semester GPA is for one term; cumulative GPA is the average across all completed terms.
Yes, use the Semester mode and enter each semester's GPA and credit hours.
Use the Transcript mode and enter each course's grade (or GPA) and credit hours as they appear on your transcript. The calculator assumes these courses count toward GPA according to the selected mapping.
Yes. Select the 5.0 scale. Letter-grade values use the calculator's built-in 5.0 mapping, which may differ from your institution's official grading policy.
Use the Current + New Semester mode. Enter your current cumulative GPA and completed credits, then the new semester's GPA and credits to see the updated cumulative GPA.
