What Is a Letter Grade?
A letter grade is a symbol — A, B, C, D, or F — that represents a student's performance in a course or on an assessment. Each letter covers a specific range of percentages, and the ranges form a school's grading scale.
Grading scales vary between schools, districts, and countries. Some use plus/minus variations, some use different cutoffs, and some do not use letter grades at all. The scale used here is a common one, but always check your school's official policy.

| 0–59.99 | F | 0.0 |
A+ counts as 4.0 in this calculator, not 4.3.
Percentage to Letter Grade
Using the standard scale above:
- 95% → A
- 85% → B
- 75% → C
- 65% → D
- 55% → F
These examples assume the standard scale. Your school's cutoffs may differ by a point or two.
Letter Grades and GPA
The GPA equivalents shown here are based on this calculator's standard 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, and so on). Many schools use this mapping, but not all.
