What Is a Weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA gives extra grade points to courses considered more challenging, such as Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB). This means a student taking harder courses can earn a weighted GPA above 4.0 even on a 4.0 scale.
An unweighted GPA treats every course the same, regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA rewards students who take more challenging classes.
How to Calculate Weighted GPA
- Convert each letter grade to its base GPA value (for example, A = 4.0).
- Add the course weight (Regular +0.0, Honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0).
- Multiply by credit hours to get weighted quality points.
- Add all weighted quality points, then divide by total credits.
Example:
AP A, 3 credits → 5.0 × 3 = 15.0
Honors B, 3 credits → 3.5 × 3 = 10.5
Regular A, 3 credits → 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
Weighted GPA = (15.0 + 10.5 + 12.0) ÷ 9 = 4.17
Weighted GPA Scale
This calculator uses the following default weighting rules:

Weighted course points are capped at 5.0. Weighting policies vary by school. Some schools use different additions, and some do not weight at all. Check your school's official policy to confirm.
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA: Every course is treated equally on a 4.0 scale. An A in a regular course and an A in an AP course both count as 4.0.
Weighted GPA: AP, Honors, and IB courses earn extra points, so an A in an AP course can count as 5.0. This allows a weighted GPA above 4.0.
Both numbers are useful, but they measure different things. This calculator shows both so you can see the difference immediately.
