GPA Goal Calculator – Find the GPA You Need to Reach Your Target
Calculate the GPA you need to reach your target cumulative GPA or see what your GPA will become after your next semester.
What Is a GPA Goal Calculator?
A GPA goal calculator helps you determine the GPA you need in future courses to reach a desired cumulative GPA. It accounts for your current cumulative GPA, current credit hours, target GPA, and the number of credit hours you plan to take.
How to Calculate the GPA You Need
The formula used is:
Required Future GPA = [Target GPA × (Current Credits + Future Credits) − Current GPA × Current Credits] ÷ Future Credits
Where all GPAs are on a 4.0 scale and credits are measured in semester hours.
How to Use This GPA Goal Calculator
- Select the GPA Goal tab.
- Enter your current cumulative GPA and current credit hours.
- Enter your target cumulative GPA and the number of credits you plan to take in the future.
- Read the required future GPA and status message.
Use the Future GPA tab to project your cumulative GPA after a known semester GPA instead.
GPA Goal Calculator Example
Suppose you currently have a 3.20 GPA with 60 credits completed. You want to reach a 3.50 cumulative GPA after taking 15 more credits.
Using the formula:
(3.50 × (60 + 15) − 3.20 × 60) ÷ 15 = 4.70
Since 4.70 is above the maximum 4.0, this target is not achievable in one semester. The maximum possible GPA after 15 credits (with a 4.0 semester) would be:
(3.20 × 60 + 4.0 × 15) ÷ 75 = 3.36
Can I Raise My GPA to My Target?
Whether you can reach a target GPA depends on three factors:
- Your current GPA – the lower it is, the harder it is to raise.
- How many credits you already have – the more credits you have, the less impact new courses have.
- How many future credits you plan to take – more credits give you more room to change the average.
If the required GPA is above 4.0, you'll need more future credits, a lower target, or additional opportunities (like repeating courses).
How Many Credits Do I Need to Reach My Target GPA?
Increasing the number of future credits you plan to take reduces the weight of your existing GPA, making it easier to reach a higher target. The more credits you add at a high GPA, the faster your cumulative average rises. This calculator shows the required GPA for a fixed number of future credits. To find how many credits you need, experiment by adjusting the future credits input until the required GPA becomes achievable (≤ 4.0).
What Will My GPA Be After This Semester?
Use the Future GPA tab. Enter your current cumulative GPA, current credits, the expected GPA for your upcoming semester, and the number of credits you'll take that semester. The calculator will project your new cumulative GPA.
Formula:
Projected GPA = (Current GPA × Current Credits + Future GPA × Future Credits) ÷ (Current Credits + Future Credits)
GPA Goal vs. Cumulative GPA
A cumulative GPA is your overall average across all semesters. This calculator helps you plan toward a target cumulative GPA. If you need to compute your cumulative GPA from individual courses, use the Cumulative GPA Calculator.
