What Is a Semester GPA?

A semester GPA measures your academic performance during a single term. It takes into account the grade you earned in each course and the credit hours assigned to that course. It does not include grades from previous semesters.

How to Calculate Semester GPA

The formula is:

Semester GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Quality points are calculated by multiplying the grade point value (e.g., A = 4.0) by the credit hours of the course. For example, an A in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points.

How to Use This Semester GPA Calculator

  1. Enter the course name (optional).
  2. Enter the grade you received or expect to receive. You can use letter grades (A, B+, etc.) or numeric GPA values (4.0, 3.7, etc.).
  3. Enter the credit hours for each course. Credit hours must be greater than zero.
  4. Add or remove rows as needed. The calculator updates automatically.

Semester GPA Example

Suppose a student takes the following courses in one semester:

CourseGradeCreditsQuality Points
Math 101A312.0
English 101B+39.9
Biology 101A-414.8
History 101B39.0

Total Quality Points = 12.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 + 9.0 = 45.7
Total Credits = 3 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 13
Semester GPA = 45.7 ÷ 13 = 3.52

Semester GPA vs. Cumulative GPA

Semester GPA looks at a single term, while cumulative GPA includes all semesters you've completed. If you want to calculate your overall GPA across multiple semesters, use the Cumulative GPA Calculator.

How to Calculate GPA from Semester Grades

Follow the steps above: convert each letter grade to its grade point equivalent, multiply by credit hours to get quality points, sum all quality points, and divide by total credits. This calculator does all of that automatically.

Semester GPA covers one term. Cumulative GPA includes all semesters combined.
Enter each course's letter grade or numeric GPA and its credit hours. The calculator applies the standard 4.0 grade-point mapping.
Credit hours act as weights. A course with more credits affects the semester GPA more than a course with fewer credits.
Yes. Semester GPA uses only courses from the current term, so you don't need previous GPA information.
The calculator automatically weights each course by its credit hours, so heavier courses influence the result more.
